Google, Dell Gain An Edge In The Enterprise

By on 21/09/2015

As Apple forges ahead with its partnership with IBM in an effort to land more iPads and iPhones in the workplace, rival Google is whipping up a collaboration of its own to compete. Reports Thursday (Aug. 13) said Google has just struck a new deal with Dell to boost Google’s edge in the enterprise.

Reports said Google’s tie-up with Dell will push Dell’s new Chromebook 13 laptop into the hands of employees, a strategy that largely depends on the Chromebook’s affordable price tag.

“Chromebooks are now ready for work,” said Chrome for Work Project Management Director Rajen Sheth while unveiling the new venture. Reports said that while the Chromebook has succeeded in penetrating the education market, it has struggled to beat out rivals Apple and Microsoft in the workplace.

But according to analysts, the current market climate could be prime for Google to strike with the enterprise crowd. Employees using Microsoft products have had to upgrade from Windows XP to the new Windows 10, a migration that has led to some speed bumps, according to analyst Rob Enderle in an interview with SFGate. Apple’s high costs, meanwhile, may also deter business users. That leaves an opening for Google to push the Chromebook into the workforce, he said.

Already, some major corporations have decided to get on board. Reports said Starbucks and Netflix are among some of the top companies that said they will now be using the Chromebook.

Google and Dell have pushed the device as one that has features key for the business crowd, including heightened security, app compatibility and other aspects that make it easy for corporate IT departments to easily onboard and integrate the device.

While Google pushes for the laptop to enter the business market, the company has also been eyeing the enterprise for a revival of its Google Glass, a flop with consumers but a wearable device that some analysts say could take off in the professional world.
